“When I think of this dish it reminds me of the simple stews that my mother, who died almost 20 years ago, used to make for Shabbat. For me a stew represents love, warmth, comfort, and nourishment,” she says. Her mother’s tomato-based stew was simple, but Sussman’s is more modern. She adds: “It speaks to the way I take traditional recipes and modernize them for my own life — [it’s also] a way of expressing my Judaism. When I moved to Israel I began instinctively making stews like this one. They connect the dots between my mother, my childhood home, and my new life in Israel.”

Adeena Sussman is the author of the instant New York Times bestselling cookbook “Shabbat: Recipes and Rituals From My Table To Yours” and “Sababa: Fresh, Sunny Flavors From My Israeli Kitchen.” She is also the co-author of 15 cookbooks including three collaborations with Chrissy Teigen. Since October 7th, Adeena has used her platform and traveled speaking about the Israeli food industry in the wake of the war and its efforts at supporting citizens, healing, and rebuilding from the tragic events of that day.
