Recipes to Find Comfort In

During these heartbreaking days, like so many of you, we are turning to the kitchen as a source of solace and strength. We are simmering pots of our grandmother’s signature soup, digging up recipes from our childhoods like this one for jam and coconut cakes, preparing easy staples like ketzitzot (meatballs) and ptitim (Israeli couscous), and trying to make the most of what’s in our pantries. Many of us are sharing what we cook and bake with our neighbors and loved ones. These small acts sustain and ground us.

We hope the recipes in this collection offer you inspiration. You will find ones for Yemenite chicken soup from musician Shai Tsabari’s mother, Moroccan harira that can be made largely from ingredients you might already have on hand, a simple Bulgarian chicken and rice dish, and nostalgic desserts like Bavarian cream and pink coconut candies. We’ve also included some of our favorite recipes to make with kids like a no-bake chocolate tahini cake and simple pasta Bolognese (you can find even more here).
