Despite its modest size, Moshav Kanaf in the Golan Heights boasts a remarkable number of high-quality, pioneering culinary and agricultural businesses. Among the most impressive is Dir Aziz Dairy, named after the ancient Dir Aziz synagogue on the Moshav. Owner Shri Baruch-Naali makes some of the best goat cheeses in Israel that are known for their clean, delicate flavors. For her, the real magic lies in her relationship with the goats — the milk is simply a byproduct, something to be transformed rather than wasted.
You can book a tour of the dairy by appointment; it includes a visit to the barn and a tasting. There is also an outdoor seating area where you can enjoy the cheeses while taking in the beautiful view of the Golan. An honor system cheese fridge is available on-site 24/7 for visitors.
Food journalist Rita Goldstein notes: “Shiri meticulously oversees everything her goats eat, crafting goat cheeses that stand out. Unlike typical goat cheeses, hers have no aftertastes — just the pure, clean flavors of remarkable, high-quality cheeses. It’s hard to pick a favorite: the mild Circassian cheese with nigella seeds, the aged Nahal cheese, or one of the creamier, more complex varieties. The best advice is to try as many as possible.”
