To arrive at Melo Hatene Farm, you will need to turn off Route 44 onto a dirt road. The sprawling organic farm was started by Menahem Hilaf’s family nearly 40 years ago. Today, it grows 320 varieties of fruit, including figs, mangoes, Panama berries, and even ice cream beans, which tastes like vanilla ice cream. To maximize land use, Hilaf has planted alternating beds of vegetables and herbs beneath the olive trees, creating a vibrant mosaic of greens. At the center of the farm, a pond attracts wildlife like frogs, which help control pests that threaten the plants.
A large stone building greets visitors, revealing an impressive array of offerings: bags of freshly roasted coffee; olive oil pressed on-site with the leftover pomace used for soap-making; sourdough breads and cakes baked in the adjacent bakery; unique blends of toasted nuts and seeds; dried fruits; and housemade spreads. The farm also features a stunning display of its produce.

Yasmin Shenhav says, “In my opinion, the farm exemplifies Israeli agriculture at its best. Beyond the impressive variety of products available at Melo Hatene, what truly stands out is Menahem Hilaf’s commitment to local values. One of the most generous and patient people I’ve met, Hilaf ensures that the farm’s products are either grown on-site, produced locally, or sourced from farmers across the country.”
