Situated at a strategic point on Highway 4, in front of Fureidis village, Abu Alabd stands as a makeshift fruit and vegetable store that has been a staple in the area for years. At the front of the store, fresh produce is sold, while in the back, a spacious area hosts women from the village, often family members, preparing homemade, traditional, and seasonal dishes and pastries.
“In my eyes, Abu Alabd is a reflection of rural Arab society, where the men are in the front of the house and the women are behind, around the pots,” observes Shira Tzidon. “Just like in a small factory, the women here pack containers of good food, including maqluba, okra, and molokhia, stuffed cabbage and grape leaves, zucchini and eggplants, fried kibbeh, and baked fellahi fatayer — huge flatbreads made filled with hyssop leaves and spinach. It feels as if the women are cooking for their family — baladi food that isn’t trying to seek the Israeli palate’s approval.”
